    Cron syntax in one minute

    A cron expression has five fields separated by spaces: minute hour day-of-month month day-of-week. Each field accepts a single value (5), a list (1,15), a range (9-17), a step (*/10) or * for every value. Months and weekdays also accept names such as JAN or MON-FRI, and day-of-week 0 and 7 both mean Sunday.

    Shortcuts like @daily, @hourly and @weekly expand to standard expressions, and the checker accepts them too.

    Running scheduled PHP jobs reliably

    • In Laravel, add a single crontab line * * * * * cd /path-to-app && php artisan schedule:run >> /dev/null 2>&1 and define every schedule in code.
    • Use ->withoutOverlapping() (Laravel) or a lock so a slow run doesn’t start twice.
    • Log output somewhere you look; silent cron failures are a classic source of missing reports and stale caches.

    Frequently asked questions

    What does * * * * * mean in cron?

    Five asterisks mean “every minute”. The five fields are minute, hour, day of month, month and day of week; an asterisk means every value of that field.

    How do I run a cron job every 5 minutes?

    Use */5 * * * *. The */5 in the minute field means every fifth minute (0, 5, 10 … 55). In Laravel the equivalent is ->everyFiveMinutes().

    Why does my cron job run on both the 13th and every Friday?

    When both the day-of-month and day-of-week fields are restricted, cron runs the job when either matches. 0 0 13 * 5 runs at midnight on the 13th of every month and on every Friday, not only on Friday the 13th.

    Which time zone does cron use?

    Cron uses the server’s time zone unless the crontab sets CRON_TZ (on systems that support it). Laravel uses the app time zone unless you call ->timezone() on the task. Next run times on this page are shown in your browser’s time zone.
