What is a zero-click search?

Short answer

A zero-click search is a search that ends without the person clicking through to any website, because the answer is shown directly on the results page or in an AI-generated answer: a featured snippet, knowledge panel, AI Overview or chatbot reply. Studies in 2024 estimated that more than half of Google searches end this way.

Why searches end without a click

  • Instant answers: weather, conversions, dates and definitions are shown at the top of the results.
  • Featured snippets and knowledge panels quote a page or a database directly.
  • AI answers: AI Overviews, AI chat and AI browsers summarise several sources in one response.
  • Refining the search: people often rephrase rather than click.

What it means for your site

Rankings no longer translate into clicks as reliably as they used to, especially for simple, factual questions. In Search Console this shows up as impressions growing faster than clicks, or a lower click-through rate at the same position.

How to respond

  1. Be the cited source: answer questions clearly so your brand appears in the answer (see answer engine optimisation). Being named builds recognition even without a click.
  2. Target questions that need depth: comparisons, implementation guides, tools and case studies still earn clicks because a short answer isn’t enough.
  3. Give a reason to visit: calculators, templates, checklists, data and interactive tools.
  4. Grow direct channels: newsletter subscribers, social followers and returning visitors don’t depend on search clicks.
  5. Measure more than clicks: impressions, branded searches and AI referrals show visibility that clicks miss.
