What is an AI browser?

Short answer

An AI browser is a web browser with an AI assistant built in, so it can read, summarise and compare the pages you have open, answer questions about them, and increasingly carry out tasks on websites for you. Examples include Perplexity Comet, ChatGPT Atlas, Microsoft Edge with Copilot Mode and Gemini in Chrome.

What an AI browser does

A traditional browser displays pages; an AI browser also understands them. A side panel or address-bar assistant can see the current page, so you can ask “summarise this report”, “compare these three pricing pages” or “find the cancellation policy”. The most capable ones go further and act as a browser agent: they click, fill in forms and move between sites to complete a task you describe.

Why it matters for websites

  • Fewer visible visits: people may get what they need from the assistant’s summary without reading the page, much like zero-click search.
  • A new kind of reader: the assistant reads your HTML, headings, tables and structured data. Clear structure gets summarised accurately; content hidden behind scripts, images or pop-ups may be missed.
  • Tasks, not just answers: forms, checkouts and booking flows that work with standard HTML controls are easier for an assistant to complete.

Security risks

Because the assistant reads untrusted pages and may be signed in to your accounts, a malicious page can try to give it instructions (prompt injection), for example to reveal data or take an unwanted action. Good AI browsers ask for confirmation before sensitive steps and limit what the assistant can access. Organisations rolling them out should decide which sites and accounts the assistant may use.

Making your site AI-browser friendly

  • Semantic HTML: real headings, lists, tables, labels on form fields.
  • A direct answer near the top of each page, then the detail.
  • Structured data (Article, FAQ, Product, Breadcrumb).
  • Stable URLs and fast pages that render without heavy client-side scripts.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI browser the same as a browser agent?

Not quite. An AI browser is the product: a browser with an assistant built in. A browser agent is the capability of an AI to operate a browser by itself, clicking and typing to complete tasks. Many AI browsers include agent features, and agents can also run in ordinary browsers.
