    Config for your MCP client

Runs in your browser: what you enter is never sent anywhere. We only count anonymous usage, such as which buttons are used, to improve the tools.

      One server, six config formats

Every MCP client stores the same information (a name, how to start or reach the server, and its environment or headers) in a slightly different shape. Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf and Claude Desktop use an mcpServers object; VS Code uses servers and requires a type; Windsurf calls the remote address serverUrl; Codex uses TOML in ~/.codex/config.toml. This tool writes each one from a single description.

Keeping tokens out of config files

      • Tick secret for anything sensitive. The files then refer to an environment variable (or, in VS Code, a prompt) instead of the value.
      • Never commit a config containing a real token. Project files like .mcp.json and .vscode/mcp.json are usually shared through git.
      • Give each server the least access it needs: read-only database users, fine-grained GitHub tokens, one folder for the filesystem server.

      Frequently asked questions

Where is the MCP config file for Claude Desktop?

On macOS it is ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json and on Windows %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json. Open it from Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, then restart Claude Desktop after saving.

What is the difference between a stdio and an HTTP MCP server?

A stdio server is a program your client starts on your machine (for example "php artisan boost:mcp" or "npx …") and talks to over standard input and output. An HTTP (streamable HTTP) server runs somewhere else and the client connects to its URL, usually with a token in a header.

How do I keep API keys out of my MCP config?

Mark them as secrets. Claude Code (${VAR}), Cursor and Windsurf (${env:VAR}) read them from your environment; VS Code asks for them once and stores them securely (inputs); Codex reads bearer tokens from an environment variable. Claude Desktop has no variables, so keep that file private.

Why does my npx MCP server fail on Windows?

Some clients start the command directly, and on Windows npx is a batch file that needs a shell. Tick Windows in this tool to run it as "cmd /c npx …" where that is needed.

How do I connect a Laravel app to Claude or Cursor with MCP?

Use Laravel Boost (php artisan boost:mcp) to give AI tools your app’s routes, schema, logs and docs, or build your own server with laravel/mcp and start it with php artisan mcp:start <handle>. Pick the Laravel presets above for the right config.
